A practical Sorcery Curio identification guide
Curios reward close inspection: a familiar card can hide different artwork, wording, symbols, typography or even material. Use this guide to compare documented collector examples across Alpha, Beta, Arthurian Legends and Gothic.

Start with the printing, not the price
Five checks before calling a card a Curio
- Edition: compare with the same set and printing, not a visually similar card from another release.
- Artwork: inspect composition, orientation, artist credit and small added or removed details.
- Text: compare type line, rules, flavour text, costs and symbols.
- Physical format: examine front and reverse, foil treatment, material and typography.
- Evidence: find a documented example and photograph the precise difference. A seller’s title alone is not proof.
Lighting, sleeves and scanning can change colour. Ordinary Alpha/Beta printing differences also exist; use the documented Alpha/Beta comparison to avoid confusing normal edition changes with Curios.
Alpha: documented examples
Alpha identification reference
| Card or treatment | What to compare | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Erik’s Curiosa Sketch | Early Francesca Baerald sketch without the Exalted Orb added to the finished painting. | Photos & evidence |
| Nine-Piece Collage | Miniature development designs with older names, resource symbols and prototype wording. | Photos & evidence |
Beta: documented examples
Beta identification reference
| Card or treatment | What to compare | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar of Earth Sketch | Séverine Pineaux’s preliminary sketch instead of the finished avatar painting. | Photos & evidence |
| Steppe | One illustration combines Truitt Parrish’s Crusade and Jihad paintings. | Photos & evidence |
| Spear of Destiny | Check the Alpha symbol and preconstructed-deck artist-credit lines together. | Photos & evidence |
Compare the Adept Illusionist examples shown in the image. The documented Beta comparison highlights the type-line wording: “skills” on the standard version and “means” on the Curio example. Check the specific edition and card image carefully; this wording difference is a clue for this example, not a universal Curio identifier.
Arthurian Legends: documented examples
Arthurian Legends identification reference
| Card or treatment | What to compare | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Wyvern | Quinton Hoover illustration rather than the standard Truitt Parrish artwork. | Photos & evidence |
| Gilded Sir Kay | Manuscript-style Elvira Shakirova illustration and gold foil. Listed as a Gilded variant; classification is debated. | Photos & evidence |
The artist credit and illustration identify the documented Hoover version. Compare with the regular Truitt Parrish printing rather than treating every alternate illustration as the same variant.

Gothic: documented examples
Gothic identification reference
| Card or treatment | What to compare | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Gift of the Frog | The bow on the frog’s head is the key visual clue. Colour differences alone are less reliable. | Photos & evidence |
| Gossamer Ghost | Drew Tucker artwork and flavour text about a cup, unlike the regular Elvira Shakirova image and candle text. | Photos & evidence |
| City of Glass | Translucent plastic construction, not glass; distinguish it from the regular card and separate alternate-art promo. | Photos & evidence |
| Realm-Eater Sketch | Printed avatar sketch with an Avatar reverse; distinguish it from the original unprinted development doodle. | Photos & evidence |
| Fallen Angel | Scott Kirschner illustration rather than the regular Gerald Brom artwork. | Photos & evidence |
| Manor at Daperyll Hill | Shared Melissa Benson artwork with distinctive typography and special text resembling a wine label. | Photos & evidence |
Look directly above the eyes: the added red bow is more useful than judging overall colour. The reference contains standard-card comparisons.

Left: Drew Tucker illustration and cup flavour text. Right: the regular Elvira Shakirova artwork and candle wording. Compare both the image and lower text before identifying the printing.

Curios, Gilded cards, foils and promos
A foil finish, unusual colour or alternate illustration is not enough by itself. A card may be a regular foil, promotional printing, artist proof or altered card. Arthurian Legends Gilded treatments are shown here with their own label rather than treating a debated category as settled.
Use the official rarity reference for gameplay rarities. Community Curio documentation answers a different question: which specific printings collectors have recorded.
Before buying or selling a possible Curio
Ask for evidence you can inspect
- Clear, unfiltered front and back photographs, including the artist credit and set symbol.
- A close view of the distinguishing detail and a same-edition comparison.
- Condition, provenance and any grading or alteration information.
- Recent completed sales for the exact printing if assessing price; asking prices alone do not establish value.
This guide supports identification; it is not authentication or a price guarantee. For buying ordinary singles, read our condition guide.

The official creator interview explains the discovery idea behind Curios. Per-card links above lead to collector photographs, comparisons and artist accounts. Collector Arthouse’s archive provides broader community coverage.
We separate visible details, attributed collector identification and unresolved classification. The three additional reference photographs illustrate the specific details discussed here; credits and links accompany each. Further photographs remain on their source pages.

Frequently asked questions
What are Curios in Sorcery: Contested Realm?
Curios are unusual collectible printings connected with the discovery side of Sorcery. This independent guide covers documented community examples from Alpha, Beta, Arthurian Legends and Gothic; it is not a complete official catalogue.
How do I identify a Sorcery Curio?
Compare the exact edition and printing with documented examples. Examine artwork, wording, symbols and layout. The differences depend on the specific card; one visual clue cannot identify every Curio.
Is every alternate-art or foil Sorcery card a Curio?
Do not assume an alternate-art card, foil or promo is a Curio. Identify its exact printing and look for reliable evidence for that card.
What are the pull rates for Sorcery Curios?
This guide does not quote a verified pull rate. Do not treat collector estimates or a single pack-opening result as official odds.
Can I buy Sorcery singles here?
Browse our Sorcery: Contested Realm singles collection for current inventory. A card described in this reference guide is not necessarily available to buy.
Is a Gilded Arthurian Legends card always a Curio?
Gilded variants have distinctive artwork and foil treatments, but community classification is debated. This guide labels them separately and links to the documented printing.
Can colour alone prove that my card is a Curio?
No. Edition changes, lighting, sleeves and scanning can affect colour. Check card-specific artwork, wording, symbols and physical details against documented examples.
